My visualization/mapping program takes only GEOTIFF or JPG2000 files for mapping. Unfortunately, all the great raster geotiff maps on this site are too large and choke it (the maps uncompressed come out to +100Mb). I tried converting to JPG2000 to reduce file size but was unsuccessful. Is there a way to reduce geotiff files to screen resolution, or say, something not larger than HD resolution (1920×1080)?
Open the GeoTIFF in an image editor and downsize by 50% for the 50m small res files to get a file under 100 mb. Then in your mapping app import and, since the TFW world file is now out of date, set the image extents back to ±180, ±90.
