Locations for labels

I am working on upgrading my program to generate azimuthal maps to use the Natural Earth shapefiles. I am trying to avoid duplicating information found in the shapefiles, but I haven’t been able to find some information needed to make a map. For example, is that a database that contains all the labels needed for make a map. I am wondering if one of the shapefiles has the names of all the countries and the location (lat, long) where the country name should be outputed. Is there such a database?
